Use Of Barriers
Many types of physical and dissuasive barriers have been tried to control browsing animals. Physical barriers include standard and electric fencing and tree-guards.
The latter include noise emission such as loud gunshots and high-pitched alarms. These have generally been ineffective with the animals becoming accustomed to the noise or it disturbs neighbours.
It is difficult to construct a completely wombat proof fence across an uneven landscape, and once the barrier is breached it loses any effectiveness.
Wallaby-proof fences are also difficult to erect. Fencing is expensive, requires continuous maintenance, and is a frequent target for thieves.
Tree guards produce mixed results. They are very expensive and must be well maintained; they can also suppress growth or act as a ladder to higher shoots.
