Tasmania's Forests

Blackwood Swamp Forests

click hereBlackwood swamp forests occur in small, poorly drained areas of north-west Tasmania and are often subject to winter flooding.

Blackwood (Acacia Melanoxylon), Tea Tree (Leptospermum Spp.) and Paper Bark (Melaleuca Ericifolia) are the major species found in this type of forest, along with similar understorey species to those found in a mixed forest.

Rainforest tree species such as myrtle, celery top pine, sassafras and leatherwood may also grow among blackwoods due to the wetness of the site.

While blackwood possess quite different growing and regeneration tendencies to eucalypts, they too require some form of disturbance to regenerate and, as such, are not rainforest species.

Blackwood trees grow in a wide range of conditions in Tasmania and are present in both wet and dry eucalypt forests as well as mixed forests and blackwood forests.
